ANTHOM, the white-hot DC e-commerce website, opens the doors to its very first brick-and-mortar shop today at 11am. The store, in Fairfax's Mosaic District development, is an extension of the site's vibe—cutting-edge designers and pieces, clean lines and an inviting feel.
The founding trio—Ashley Turchin, Marshall Johnson and Carla Cabrera—zoomed into shop ownership, going from contract to opening day in just a few months. Turchin and Johnson told Racked that brick-and-mortar had been in ANTHOM's sight since the beginning, and that the online store is here to stay. "We always wanted both," said Johnson.
The shop's interiors were designed by Johnson and executed by all three. Johnson describes the interior as "warm modernism"—utilizing the pale, natural woods and copper that he gravitated towards. The result is artful wood paneling and copper pipes galore (to hold and display the clothing on matching copper hangers, of course) and surprisingly dramatic sheeting. Licks of pale pink run through the space, as the trio is really drawn to pastels. "It's really cool to say we designed it ourselves," said Turchin.
The clothing and accessories in the shop are those that you'll find on ANTHOM's site—from up-and-coming and lesser-known brands like Ksenia Schnaider, Kimem, Low Classic and Miista. Pieces skew pricey, but you can find some good stuff under $100—like Jujumade brass/cord necklaces.
A favorable relationship with Mosaic District developer EDENS brought ANTHOM to Virginia—though they assumed in the beginning that they'd open shop in DC proper. Johnson said he wanted to reach new kinds of people through the VA location. Judging by the passersby who wandered in during the closed press viewing, it's probably safe to say ANTHOM has a hit on their hands.
