Head to any independent boutique in the Washington area, and there's a strong chance they will carry products from Skincando, D.C.'s own natural skincare company. "There's been a real trend where everyone is looking for local organic products that represent artisans where we live," Skincando founder Sara Damelio told Racked DC. Damelio started her skincare business by whipping up 100% natural and certified organic products in a Kitchenaid mixer. The ingredients are still all-natural, and Skincando still uses Kitchenaids, but now Skincando's up to five mixers in a studio in Silver Spring where the products are crafted in small batches. Damelio's company also supports U.S. troops through Operation Sand Flea.
Skincando offers everything from Combat Ready lip balm to luxe Miracle Cream with organic rose geranium oil and Vitamins A and E. "Think of it like organic La Mer," she said. Starting tomorrow, customers will be able to buy Skincando Summer Survival kits with balm, bug repellent, and more.
We were inspired by Damelio's story, so we got to know her a little better with a few quick questions about everything from her guilty pleasure TV shows to the Del Rey salon that you have to know about, now. Find D.C. recommendations and tips for anyone with a small business dream after the jump.
