Richmond, Virginia maternity boutique Hip to be Round is opening a second location at Mosaic District in Fairfax. And the grand opening bash on March 1 will include freebies like generous swag bags for the first 50 customers and complimentary chair massages for moms-to-be from a prenatal massage therapist. The decision to enter the Washington market was influenced directly by shoppers at Hip to be Round's Carytown boutique. "We've found that over the course of the past several years, lots of our customers are from the D.C. metro area," Hip to be Round owner Christa Donohue told Racked DC. Beyond national chains, Donohue said, "the truth of the matter is that there just aren't a lot of options for maternity wear in the D.C. area." And no one wants to wear the same outfit as every other pregnant woman in town, she noted.
At Hip to be Round's Mosaic District shop, expectant moms will find everything from Michael Stars, Citizens of Humanity, and Paige Denim's maternity lines to nursing wear, swimwear and lingerie, and work attire like basic black pants, suiting options, and work-appropriate dresses. "That covers some of the gap that we are seeing in the marketplace," Donohue said.
In addition, Hip to be Round's sales associates are all experienced moms and can guide customers through shopping options that can be perplexing to newbies. "We're really helping expectant moms understand what the clothing can do, how to best flatter their changing body, so that the nine months of pregnancy is the most beautiful time in their life," said Donohue.
