700 Shoppers, 30 Boutiques, Tons of Deals at District Sample Sale

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The VIP tickets sold out at yesterday's District Sample Sale at The Sphinx Club on K Street, and by the time general admission opened, the venue was crowded with shoppers trying on dresses over jeans in the aisles. All those shoppers translated to a 15% increase in attendance over last year for the annual charity event, which this year benefited N Street Village. And organizers told us the event raised north of $300,000 total yesterday.

What did everyone buy? Anything and everything, for every season. Local boutiques from Washington and Baltimore offered end-of-sale items at clearance prices and fall preview items too. Merchandise ran the gamut from $100 Nanette Lepore summer dresses at the Tuckernuck table to agate coasters at Bethesda boutique Ginger and VPL by LD Tuttle boots at 75% off from Muleh. Shoppers scooped up blazers for work, or not so work-friendly options like leather shorts from Style Etoile and Tracy Reese party dresses from Dupont Circle boutique Proper Topper.
